The Victorian state government has today revealed more information about a plan to rebuild Ringwood East railway station as part of level crossing removal works in the Australian state.

It was announced in July of last year that two level crossings in the Melbourne suburb of Ringwood were to be removed by 2025, with rail trenches to be created underneath Dublin and Bedford Road where crossings currently exist. The Ringwood East station is to be rebuilt in a trench as part of these works, with a state government press release today announcing that it will contain “a forecourt with direct access to shops and bus connections, and a new entrance to the platforms”, as well as “new lifts, stairs, lighting, upgraded pedestrian and cycling paths in the area, [and] 460 upgraded commuter car parks.”

These level crossings are among twelve on the Lilydale and Belgrave railway lines that are being planned for removal and that, once removed, will make the former line entirely level crossing free, and the latter line level crossing free from the Melbourne CBD to Ferntree Gully.

The government has emphasised the inconveniences caused by the level crossings, claiming that “about 23,000 vehicles use the Dublin Road and Bedford Road level crossings each day, with the boom gates down for up to 23 minutes of the morning peak at each location, causing delays and congestion.” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan stated that the crossings “cause traffic chaos in Ringwood during peak hour”, adding “removing them will make the roads safer for drivers and provide a brand-new, modern station for train passengers”.

Site investigations are currently underway at Dublin Road. Major construction at the site is to begin next year.
